CODP vs. CWDP

Your Guide on Childminder Settings

Choosing the right childcare setting is an important decision for parents and childminders alike. Whether you're seeking to understand different childcare options or looking to set up your own childminding business, it's crucial to know the difference between two key types of childminder settings: Childminders Operating on their Own Domestic Premises (CODP) and Childminders without Domestic Premises (CWDP).

What is a Child carer Operating in their Own Domestic Premises (CODP)?

We are committed to providing childminders with comprehensive, efficient, and valuable support, ensuring they deliver the highest quality childcare to children and their families. At SCA, exceptional childcare means more than just education—it's about nurturing each child's personal development and well-being. Our approach promotes a supportive environment where children are encouraged to thrive and grow, preparing them for a smooth transition to school.

Key features:

The childminder’s home is where childcare is provided.
Planning permission is required as the house is primarily used as a residence.
Providing consistent, structured support to childminders at every stage of their career.

What is a Childminder Working on non-Domestic Premises (CWDP)?

Up to four CWDP childminders can provide care from a residential property that no one lives in. This setup is like a small nursery or daycare but still operates under the childminder framework. Because the property is used solely for childcare and not as a personal residence, planning permission is often required to get a change of use classification for the building.

Key features:

The property is dedicated exclusively to childcare, and no one resides there.
Planning permission for “change of use” from residential to childcare is required.
May offer larger spaces and more flexibility with childminding capacity.
Up to four childminders can provide care within the same CWDP property, making it a collaborative
and scalable option for childminders.

Childminder SCA Agency Support for CWDPs:

Childminders operating in a CWDP setting are also eligible for financial support. Up to **four childminders in one CWDP property can each receive the £1,200 grant from a childminder agency.

This grant is paid in two parts for each childminder:
£600 upon registration with a childminder agency.
£600 when they start minding their first child, which must be within six months of registering.

Planning Permission and Change of Use

For childminders operating in a CWDP setting, it is important to understand that the house will no longer be classified purely as a residential home, and you’ll need to apply for planning permission to change its use to a childcare setting. The local council will assess factors like parking, noise levels, and the impact on the neighbourhood before granting approval.

For more detailed information on available grants and how to apply for planning permission, please visit the GOV.UK website or contact your local authority.

Whether you're looking to set up a cosy, home-based childcare business (CODP) or scale up in a dedicated childcare space (CWDP), understanding these differences will help you plan better and comply with regulations, giving parents confidence in your service.
