Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a dangerous practice involving the partial or total removal or injury of the external female genitalia, often justified by cultural, religious, or non-medical reasons. Known also as female circumcision or cutting, FGM can impact females from birth through pregnancy and causes severe and long-lasting physical and psychological harm. Although there are reports of FGM occurring within the UK, most victims are typically taken abroad for the procedure, often during school holidays.
